ATTRACTIONS & TOURISM

The Salmo area offers a diverse mix of outdoor recreation, cultural landmarks, and quirky local attractions throughout the year. Outdoor enthusiasts can take advantage of the local nine-hole golf course, West Kootenay BMX track, and extensive hiking or cross-country routes along the Great Northern Rail Trail and Springboard Park's old-growth forest. There are also several trails at the Salmo Ski Hill and other locations as well. Visit the Salmo Valley Trail Society website for more information. Water lovers swim at the Olympic size outdoor pool or paddle, kayak, and fish for bass and trout at Erie Lake. Locals like to cool off at swimming holes along the Salmo River and Erie Creek.
In winter, the community centers on the volunteer-run Salmo Ski Hill for weekend and night skiing, local curling leagues, and snowmobiling across the Selkirk Mountains, while summer brings the world-famous Shambhala Music Festival. Salmo's rich heritage is preserved through the Salmo Museum and a local historical mining exhibit. There are seven unique flagstone murals depicting the area's wildlife and logging and mining history.
Visitors can cap off their trip with a stop by the historic Salmo Hotel, grabbing a local pint at Erie Creek Brewing, or checking out quirky roadside stops like the eight-foot-tall "World’s Largest Penny" and the "World’s Oldest Phone Booth," carved out of a 465-year-old hollowed cedar tree.
